Honest and goodwill Nigerians must support ATM #SidikiweMarch

Johannesburg – The 498 Nigerian members of MigrantsMovement have voiced their support for the march of the African Transformation Movement party to the Nigerian Embassy today. This comes after several debates and conversations aired online that labeled Nigerians as defensive rather than been part of fixing the issues. An Interview on PowerFM with Andile Khumalo was a bitter pill to swallow as an individual who allegedly represents Nigerians made a far more negative representation of the issue.

Nigerians who are part of the migrants’ movement, many of whom are professionals and made their skills and time available to support local organisations in the fight against crime, wants citizens to be aware of their commitments, and contributions to finding ways of dealing with the issues of crime amongst migrants in the country.

Being a Nigerian is not safe in South Africa, and that’s because every Nigerian is sterotyped as a drug dealer. We are all labelled as criminals, this is why I joined this movement so we can do more than just talk. Enough of the blame game, every citizen must fight the scourge of crime and we can only do it together, says Mr Bankole Ogunbiyi

The members have sent in several letters commending the move of the African Transformation Movement political party from moving the narrative away from attacks to dialogue and from a negative drive to a more engaging one. They believe the party has every right to march as part of their constitutional rights and should get all the support they need.

A letter was also sent to the embassy of Nigeria to ensure that the memorandum presented to the officials is treated with seriousness and all issues meted out should be included on a reform agenda for her citizens.

No honest and goodwill Nigerian that wants a stop to the ring of our citizens involved in the crime would stop the protest. We see this as a progressive move and one that should be encouraged says Mrs Ogunjimi Esan, a Chartered Accountant in Capetown.

We have people who for the first time are saying we want a peaceful march to hand over a memorandum and in so doing engage with the embassy to see how the issues that are currently used to label Nigerians can be handled collectively and people are angry. What sort of backwardness is that, this must be encouraged, says Mr Ekanem Ojo who is a Physician in Johannesburg and one of the members of migrantsmovementsa.

The MigrantsmovementSA appreciates the efforts of these members as the movement continues to dialogue with citizens and migrants alike on ways to mitigate the issues faced by all.

The purpose of the ‘network’ is to redistribute access to knowledge and change the narrative that considered migrants a liability to the nation, which coined the word Amakwerekwere, a term adopted as an expression of defiance to the migrant communities.

But when would Nigerians own up and know they messed up a lot of people’s lives? ATM rescheduled again and again but at least it’s a better to see some progress and Nigerians that are doing something. All the best
